I posed a similiar question after using a quart in a 800 miles trip to Lander WY (FSSOC Rally) after changing from Mobil 1 10-40 to Valvoline synthetic 20-50 expecting to be running in hot weather. Ended up running in therain and snow the 2nd and 3rd day when the oil use occurred. One suggestion was chaning brands caused the high use. However I added a quart of 20-50 synthetic cycle oil for the trip home and didn't use a measurable amount and it was blistering hot on the way home. Vale Or was 98 and Pendleton was 105. So far my only logical rationale is the cold weather caused the clyinder bore to distort enough to allow the oil past the rings. My brother was following me and did not notice any blue smoke, but I think between the synthtic and heavy load climbing the hills it just vaporized completely. Max
